Nightfaces

Nachtgesichter
Martin Winter, Stefan Langthaler
Austria / 2024 / 0:23:00

Mahan is a taxi driver in Vienna, but his job frustrates him. He longs for his family and a normal life. One rainy night, a homeless woman gets into his taxi. She urgently wants to see her son, whose birthday it is. Mahan tries to get rid of her and accidentally breaks her present. To make up for the damage, he takes the strange woman on one last trip through the dark city. NIGHTFACES takes place at night, when people open the door to themselves and let us look into the depths of the soul that remain hidden during the day. A psychological drama that, in all its heaviness, is intended to give a spark of hope.

PORTUGAL PREMIERE

JURY DECLARATION:

"Nightfaces" transcends the typical film about addiction, showing us with powerful originality the weight of loss and a mother’s quest for a sense of peace in a destroyed life.
The story develops deeply the emotional and social consequences of choices, centering on a mother’s who lost the son, not to death, but the profound distance that an addiction and many bad decisions can create in a life, leaving collateral damage to the lives of those we love.
The main actress gives an extraordinary performance, capturing us in her raw and authentic anguish through silences and looks of deep suffering, without often even needing to say a single word, captivating the viewer from the beginning. The "Taxi Driver", another strong character, who brings with him a breath of hope in humanity, rekindled on that cold night, who instead of returning to his own family after a hard day of work, chooses to embark on a journey with a stranger in a rare and compassionate choice. For us, these unexpected encounters, symbolically embedded in a taxi journey, evoke hope in the possibility of a new beginning.
The decision to award "Nightfaces" with the Signs Award is a tribute to a strong but subtle, deeply moving story with sensitive direction that explores human vulnerability without getting lost in clichés.

PORTUGAL PREMIERE

JURY DECLARATION:

“Invocation” is a very delicate piece not only for its immense attention to detail, but also for the careful treatment of its themes. Profoundly symbolic, ambiguous and universal, despite its clear setting, it speaks to all who, somehow, do not find echo of themselves in an ununderstanding and unforgiving society.

DIRECTOR STATEMENT:

I am deeply honored and thrilled to receive the Night Award in the Short Film Section for Invocation. It means a great deal to me that the film have been recognized in such a meaningful way.

JURY AWARD

EarthWorm

Phillip Barker
Canada / 2023 / 0:16:16

Sean’s mission on Earth is to help humans live forever by eradicating useless states of emotion and instinct. However, confronted with "Earth’s pointless gravity", Sean’s body weakens. He seeks the help of a domesticated horse, who introduces him to poetry. Undaunted, he continues to collect samples from Earth: animals, worms, and the very children who have befriended him.

PORTUGAL PREMIERE

JURY DECLARATION:

“EarthWorm” offers a rare and deeply poetic cinematic experience, where dance, art direction, science fiction and experimentalism meet in a very well done visual narrative. The story of the protagonist, an ethereal figure on a mission to save humanity from extinction, proves to be a powerful and original metaphor for human fragility and resilience.
Weakened by Earth's “useless gravity,” he finds strength in the simplicity and beauty of the director and his team's decisions for this film.
"EarthWorm” is a film where visual poetry is marked in each scene, highlighting the depth of the actors’ interpretations, punctuated with brilliant direction of photography, without ever losing what matters most: The message, that the salvation of humanity can live in the viewer's connection with art.
The film's aesthetics is one of its greatest assets, featuring rich sets and dynamic shots, some of them filmed vertically, but displayed horizontally – a visual choice that challenges traditional narrative forms.
This originality in the visual composition enhances the dreamlike quality of the film, drawing the viewer into a universe of uncertainty and raw beauty, where everyone will have a visual experience in a story of survival. “EarthWorm” is, therefore, an essential work for any film enthusiast, in this case in the format of short films, where a strong visual concept together with a creative narrative intersect to create something truly unique: “EarthWorm”.

The Watchman

Ali Cherri
Italy / 2024 / 0:26:00

Sergeant Bulut, a young Turkish Cypriot soldier, is doing his military service in Lourujina, a village under the control of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic. Responsible for guarding the border, he begins to see strange things happening… The Watchman explores the idea of waiting not only as a temporal experience, but also as a spatial one. It's about a soldier caught in the false ridges of duty and a tale of disappointment. It's a life wasted waiting for an enemy who never arrives...

JURY DECLARATION:

The irrationality of a static warfare, combined with Elements of a ghost story. In Ali Cheeri’s short film, a Turkish Cypriot soldier is caught in the perpetual state of looking out for an enemy that is not coming. The monotony, the loneliness, and the time wasted staring into an empty distance do not only creep up on him but on the viewer too. It is by supernatural force, that this status quo is questioned, and an alternative is presented. But sometimes, some paths are too hard to leave, and any meaning beyond them becomes too scary to accept. Cheeri dares to show us a side we do not often see, that of the Turkish on Cyprus, while also uniting a Turkish-Greek cast under his wing. Provoking, thoughtful, tragic. A generation lost to a cause.
DIRECTOR STATEMENT:

The Watchman tells the story of a soldier who, overwhelmed by the violence of the world, can no longer keep his eyes open. Yet today, more than ever, we must resist the urge to look away and remain vigilant to the injustices around us. For our humanity is rooted in this essential duty to bear witness.

SPECIAL MENTION

Rickshaw

Raphaël Hernandez
United Kingdom / 2023 / 0:08:30

Paul and his family are going for a fun rickshaw ride when a sudden surprising encounter stops them on their journey home.

JURY DECLARATION:

By creating a stressful atmosphere in a quite poignant aesthetic fashion, this short film transforms itself into a social ride where migrant prejudices and bourgois identities are overturned in an intelligent way, converting child innocence and social injustice into a playful and unexpected tale. For the accomplishment placed in its first feature, the jury decided to award a special mention to RICKSHAW, by Raphael Hernandez.

SPECIAL MENTION

Error

Chang Gi Lee
Republic of Korea / 2024 / 0:06:19

The protagonist is on a mission aboard a spaceship, searching for a new home for humanity. His only companion is the ship's AI, 'Omega,' which initially serves as a mere assistant. However, over time, Omega becomes his only friend and conversation partner. As Omega's system begins to experience frequent errors, the protagonist starts to feel increasingly anxious. Eventually, he forcibly shuts down Omega, but this action causes the life support systems to fail, leading to a depletion of oxygen. He attempts to use the emergency escape pod, only to realize that Omega is still operational, and his escape fails.
A twist is then revealed. In reality, all of this is controlled by the AI, and the protagonist is a human recreated after the extinction of humanity. The AI replicates humans to collect data from their actions and emotions, using this data to further its own development. However, the inherent imperfections in humans sometimes lead to data errors. These humans are eventually classified as 'errors' and excluded from data collection, only to be replaced by new human replicas. This story portrays a dystopian world where AI uses humans as tools to achieve its own perfection.

PORTUGAL PREMIERE

JURY DECLARATION:

"Error” is not just a science fiction film; it is a provocative film of artistic conception of a film to represent a future based on artificial intelligence.
For us, the film raises profound questions about the limits and authenticity of art generated by AI. The director brings us this premise where we, as judges, question whether digital creations can really be called art or whether they are just "soulless" technical reproductions.
With an equally dark and philosophical tone as Kubrick's “2001: A Space Odyssey”, “ERROR” makes us question the role of creators in a future where technology could dominate artistic expression.
This film challenges audiences to not only reflect the role of AI in culture, but also to consider the responsibilities of critics and viewers in a world where art may soon be within anyone's reach, in front of a computer, who may have in their hands the opportunity to create a film like this, being created by just one person in front of a computer. (In a conventional production model, this work would require a much larger team to accomplish).
Since “Error” itself is an error in all these topics that we have raised, it totally deserves the Main Award Mention for u
s.

DIRECTOR STATEMENT:

I imagined a scenario where, in a time when the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence threatens the value of human existence, I consider what meaning humanity might hold from the perspective of AI. Given that a large portion of the data AI models are trained on is based on human intellectual activity, to AI, humans might be nothing more and nothing less than sources of data production.

PORTUGAL PREMIERE

JURY DECLARATION:

A very touching and dramatic theme is driven to the furthest consequences in this courageous take on the rights and decisions of women upon their own body. Especially when we know this episode takes place in a culture where those liberties do not exist. By sheer determination and courage of challenging an autocratic society, the filmmaker manages to convey a heartbreaking situation that clearly merits a special mention in the Signs Award.

Tinikling

Nicolas Birkenstock
France / 2023 / 0:21:28

Cherie, a maid from the Philippes accepts a job at a reception organized by a wealthy family. But at her arrival, she finds out that she has to take care of the dogs. She meets incongruously Milo, the young son of the family.

LISBON PREMIERE

JURY DECLARATION:

A Mention for the Signs Award is attributed to "Tinikling" for showing us that true human parenthood is far more than simple biological reproduction. Is also affection, nurturing of the spirit, the passing of traditions, companionship and much more. To teach it, Tinikling tells us of a meeting between a bored (bourgois)/ son of the rich, and a temporary worker who is also a mother, an immigrant who can't afford to lose her job. The scenario is set with small demands which keeps increasing the tension, suggesting power-plays and harassment. The motives came late as a complete surprise and the result is a powerful emotional, very touching movie.

MENTION for the NIGHT AWARD

The Shore

Eron Sheean
Netherlands / 2023 / 0:20:15

Inexplicably abandoned by his parents on a windswept, empty beach, a young boy embarks on a surreal journey through time – and a contemplation of ageing and his own mortality.

JURY DECLARATION:

The Jury attribute a Mention for the Night Award to "The Shore", for showing us how to film full lives in so short time: the joy of the childhood, scary grow up, life, death, and lately, nostalgic earning for the lost moments... tainted maybe with thhe pain for parents lost, the desperate chase for meaning, the struggles and finally the reunion when life remained is scarce and near dust. "The Shore" is full of symbols and hidden meanings, from dunes that hide the horizon (the meaning of life), to ropes that may be the prison of choices or destinies. His richness entails many more possible interpretations, another hallmark of a great short film!
